Chocolate Soda Bread

  • 3 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp. cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. white sugar
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 large egg, whisked
  1. Preheat oven to 425°F.  Dust a baking sheet with flour.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, soda powder and cocoa powder. Add in the dark chocolate chips by lifting the ingredients through the flour and dropping them back in; this will bring air into the loaf.
  3. Make a well in the middle of the bowl, add whisked egg and pour 1 1/2 cup buttermilk to start, stir just until the ingredients are incorporated. If batter seems dry add more buttermilk, I generally use 1 3/4 cup of buttermilk. Turn out onto a floured work surface and form into a ball.
  4. Take a large knife and make a criss cross cut on the surface of the bread, cut all the way through the loaf. Put on baking sheet.
  5. Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes at 425°F, and then drop down the temperature to 400°F and bake for another 30-40 minutes. When you tap the bread it will sound hollow when it’s done, if you have an instant read thermometer the internal temperature should be 180°F.
